With the lighting available, using fill flash would've helped in shots like this:
 I'm guessing you're using the kit lens since you were shooting at 18mm focal length. Switch over to AV mode and shoot at f/4.0. With some more practice, you'll get the most of the 350D. Also, upgrade from the kit lens to something like a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 ($330 after rebates). Even a Canon 50 f/1.8 II ($70) would be for these types of shots. For $70, it's a great bang for the buck since you won't find many fast lenses for that cheap.
